Nearly 60 percent of the objects are smaller than a pinhead. Workers who need prescription safety eyeglasses can experience eye fatigue if they do not have a suitable frame for their prescription. The prescription, the lens material, the frame shape, and frame size all have to work well together. Your eyeglass prescription heavily influences the lens design, type and index that you require to see your best. In turn, these parameters can help determine the frame options best suited to accommodate them. Likewise, your lifestyle and how you use your eyes most can influence which frame offers the greatest benefits in terms of frame type, ruggedness, dimensions, weight, flexibility, and material type. As a general rule, the higher your prescription or greater the prescription imbalance is between your eyes, the greater the need for more advanced, personalized lenses and a suitable frame. Our experienced licensed opticians are here to help tailor and craft eyewear to you and your needs.

The Canadian Safety Association (CSA) is a standards organization with the mission to enhance the lives of Canadians with the advancement of safety standards in the public and private sectors through research, development, education, and advocacy. The Z94.3 standard relates to Eye and Face Protector’s compliance for industrial and educational processes. Hazards covered by this standard include, flying particles / objects, heat sparks, chemical splashes, molten metal, airborne droplets, and visible and infrared radiation. For any prescription safety glasses to meet CSA Safety Standards, they must meet exact criteria for which materials can be used and how they are manufactured. They must also be sufficiently thick to pass the Impact Resistance Test, consisting of a 46-gram steel ball hitting the lens surface at an impact velocity of 46 meters per second.

Safety frames are manufactuered to be stronger than street-wear frames and often offer heat resistance as well. They are also designed to prevent lenses from being pushed into the eyes. Safety glasses are typically manufactured using polycarbonate lenses. Polycarbonate lenses offer the most impact resistance, are lightweight, can be coated with scratch resistant lens coatings, and possess built-in UV protection. Polarized Sunglass Lenses

Polarized tinted lenses improve visual comfort and reduce glare. Learn how they provide increased visual performance.

Polycarbonate Lenses

Polycarbonate lenses are a common choice for safety glasses, but other lens options exist that may be a better choice.

It is a common misconception that it is the lens tint that protects our eyes from UV light. However, the it is the tint or polarization that filters glare and enables better vision. It is the lens material type or lens coating that provides protection from UV radiation. Lenses with a refactive index values greater than 1.50 typically offer UV protection. Because safety glasses are typically constructed of Trivex (1.53) or polycarbonate (1.59) matials, UV protection is provided by the material. For other lens materials, UV400 lens coatings can be applied to provide UV protection.

Safety glasses are typically crafted using either Trivex or polycarbonate lenses because these materials provide better impact-resistance than other plastic lenses. Unfortunately, increased impact resistance comes at the cost of scratch-resistance. So, it is paramount that care be taken when cleaning your saftey glasses, especially on the job site. Here are some tips to care and clean for your prescription safety glasses.
  • The safest way to remove particles from the lenses is by running your eyewear under room temperature water. This prevents grinding hard particles into the lens surface.
  • Always use the recommended/provided lens cleaner and microfibre cloth. Never use use window cleaner (i.e., Windex) or solvents, as they can damage lens coatings and lens material. Also, never use your shirt or paper paper towel to clean your glasses, as they have fibres that can scatch lenses.
  • Always rinse and clean your safety eyewear at the end of the work day, as dust particles (i.e. cement/cocnrete dust) can mix with prespiration and bond to your eyewear.
  • Never leave your eyewear in your vehicles. Temperatures inside vehicles can become incredibly hot or cold and these extreme temperatures can cause damage to lens coatings.

Fogging safety glasses is not only really annoying, it's also incredibly dangerous. Why? First, it impacts your ability to see clearly. Second, danger always lurks if you have to remove your glasses to fix the issue because you would be exposing your eyes to the dangers of the jobsite. We offer several different products to combat fogging eyewear.

Bug repellants and suncreens can sometimes cause damage to plastics. Please be mindful of the active incredients of bug repellants and suncreens before applying it to your face and neck areas. Removal of your eyewear before applying bug repellant and suncreens may also reduce the likelihood of damage.

In general, it is our position that most safety glasses benefit from scratch resistant, anti-reflective, and oleophobic lens coatings. Our licensed opticians always present patients with options, share how how they address their particular needs, and identify how they would benefit. The final decision on whether to include lens coatings in your purchase is always that of the patient - we simply want to help ensure that patients are informed before making such an important decision.

To qualify as safety eyewear, prescription safety glasses must meet CSA Standard CAN/CSA-Z94. 3-92. (In some cases, ANSI Standard Z87. 1-1989 is acceptable as well.)

Yes, we can help. However, we recommend that you first seek the assistance of the original place of purchase. In the event that they are unable or unwilling to assist you, we can certainly help troubleshoot any issues you may be encountering. Please be mindful that we cannot stand by, or be held to account for the craftsmanship of products provided elsewhere. Fees may apply.
