Eye-deology Vision Care: Edmonton Optometrists, Opticians and Eyewear

Optometrist-Fitted Contact Lenses Ensure Your Best Vision & Eye Health

Approximately 1 in 5 iindividuals wear contact lenses. The reason why individuals elect to wear contact lenses varies. In some cases, individuals can see better with contact lenses than with prescription glasses. That is often due to cornea shape or dry eye symptoms. Because contact lenses are medical devices that sit directly on the eye, the most important decision an individual can make is to have their contact lenses prescribed, fitted, and annually examined by a qualified optometrist. Why is this so important? Because improper fitting contact lenses can lead to devastating visual complications that may not be reversible. Visit one of our optometrists today, and be confident that you have the contact lenses best fitted to your eyes, lifestyle, and vision needs.

There are several types of contact lenses. Soft contact lenses are the most commonly worn type of contact lenses. In North American, 90 percent of contact lens wearers use soft contact lenses. Soft contact lenses are composed of malleable plastic polymers. They are very flexible and, when fit properly, will form to the cornea (the front surface of the eye). Their advantages include:

  • Offer greater initial comfort than hard or Rigid Gas Permeable lenses.
  • Typically have a shorter adaptation period for new wearers.
  • Ideal for occasional wear.
  • Less susceptible to the intrusion of foreign objects under the lens, such as dust.
  • Less sensitivity to light than with hard or Rigid Gas Permeable lenses.
  • Rarely fall out of the eye, making them ideal for sports, particularly for contact sports such as football or basketball.
  • Available in tinted versions.

Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) lenses are hard contact lenses made of silicone-containing compounds that allow oxygen to pass through the lens material to the eye. Newer RGP lenses offer the advantage of allowing more oxygen to pass through to the eye than soft contact lenses. They are often referred to as oxygen permeable lenses and are available in daily wear and extended wear options.

  • Provide sharper, clearer vision than soft contact lenses.
  • Correct most corneal astigmatism.
  • Better durability than soft contact lenses.
  • Good handling characteristics.
  • Easier to care for than soft contact lenses.

A common misconception is that contact lenses are a replacement for eyeglasses and eliminate the need for glasses. On the contrary, contact lens wearers should always have an up-to-date pair of prescription glasses. There are several reasons why.

  • Eyes Need To Breathe. Healthy eyes require oxygen. Accordingly, individuals should limit the amount of time they wear contact lenses. Glasses are excellent for bedtime reading, weekends, etc.
  • Convenience. Contact lenses should be removed before sleeping. Glasses can be conveniently slipped-on to bridge the gap bewteen waking up and getting ready for your day.
  • Safety. Contact lenses should not be worn in the water (e.g., swimming) or in particular work environments (e.g., laboratories). Prescription glasses or prescription safety glasses provide clear vision in these enviornments.
  • Eye Emergencies And Infections. If you are a contact lens wearer and have an eye emergency or develop an infection, you will need to stop wearing contact lenses until the healing process completes.
  • Damage Or Lost Lenses. Contact lenses get lost and can be damaged. A backup pair of glasses ensure clear vision while you pursue a replacement.

Contact lenses work by altering the curvature of light rays as they enter the eye. This moves the image so it focuses at the retina (i.e., back of the eye), resulting in clear vision.

There have been significant strides in contact lens technology in recent years. The risk of contact lens-related eye damage is low as long as you follow your optometrist's advice and recommendations.

The materials used to make contact lenses depend on the type of contact lens. Some soft contact lenses are made of hydrophilic “water-containing” polymers called hydrogels, while others are made from silicone hydrogel, a newer material which is also made of water-containing polymers but with the addition of silicone. This permits a high amount of oxygen to pass through the lens.

No, that is physically impossible. A terrifying thought for sure, but impossible. Now if you rub your eye, the contact lens might move around. Try some rewetting drops to get it back in position.

Although it is tempting, we recommend that you do not swim in your contact lenses. Instead, inquire about protective eye wear and prescription swim goggle options.

Yes, you can wear makeup with contact lenses. We recommend putting your contact lenses in before you do your makeup. Otherwise, you might ruin a perfectly good cat eye. Oh, and maybe go easy on the mascara so you don not get any on your contact lens.

It is different for everyone. Some get them in like that, while others may take several minutes. Maybe add a few minutes to regular morning and night routines for the first few days. Like all thing, - baking, studying for finals, underwater jumping jacks - practice makes perfect! Soon it will take you no time at all.
